Instrumentation & Technology

The Genome Sequencing Facility (GSF) is currently located in the 2nd-floor laboratory space (Rm. 2.120) in Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute building.  It has approximately 1000 sq. ft. of research space, which contains bench stations and a set of standard equipment for a fully operational molecular biology lab. There are dedicated spaces for sample QC, library preparation, QC, cBot amplification, and set up the sequencing run.

The Genome Sequencing Facility (GSF) is equipped with the most popular Illumina NGS portfolio, including Illumina NovaSeq 6000 System, Illumina NextSeq 2000 for high throughput next-generation sequencing, and a high-performance computer cluster for massive data processing and storage requirements. The GSF also owns a 10X Genomics Chromium System to carry on single-cell analysis. The genomics laboratory is equipped with specialized equipment needed to create a range of sequencing libraries from genomic DNA, ChIP-DNA, RNA, and small RNA samples.

Illumina sequencers including, NextSeq2000, NovaSeq6000, 10X Genomics Chromium system, sample/library QC instruments from Agilent including 2100 Bioanalyzer, TapeStation 4200, and Fragment Analyzer Automated CE System -48 cap, Eppendorf epMotion 5075t Liquid Handling Workstation, are highly specialized equipment, only the trained and qualified people can have direct access to the instrumentation. The GSF manages a Covaris sonicator which is available for NGS users. These instruments are critical to many NGS processes and are frequently used by the GSF. To balance these demands, we have established a user service mechanism to use these instruments: users are trained to use instruments and they are responsible for any reagents/consumables used for the instruments. There is no instrumentation usage charge if they process the samples that will be used for sequencing at GSF. Otherwise, there is an associated instrumentation usage charge if they process the samples not related to the GSF.
