Pediatric oncologist and researcher Gregory Aune, MD, PhD, tells the story of his favorite patient, a teenage boy some 30 years ago who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The patient survived but has experienced many health complications as a direct result of the cancer treatments, including a nonfunctioning thyroid gland, blocked coronary arteries requiring open-heart surgery, a mild stroke, multiple skin cancers, and more.

He does what he does, he says, because he is that patient. Having Hodgkin’s lymphoma “is the singular event of why I’m here today.”
