Surviving childhood cancer is the goal. But survival can come with consequences that last a lifetime.
At the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute, the Aune Lab, led by Gregory J. Aune, MD, PhD, studies the long-term health effects caused by the chemotherapy and radiation used to treat childhood cancer.
Dr. Aune brings a perspective few researchers can: he is a childhood cancer survivor himself. Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at age 16, he experienced firsthand both the lifesaving power of cancer treatment and the serious health problems that can emerge years later.
Today, his laboratory investigates how cancer therapies damage healthy tissues, with a particular focus on the heart and cardiovascular system. The goal is not only to understand why these late effects occur, but ultimately to help identify children at greatest risk and develop ways to prevent or reduce treatment-related damage.
Because curing childhood cancer is only part of the mission.
Children deserve the chance to grow up — and to live long, healthy lives after cancer.
