Our cells constantly repair DNA damage. Understanding how that repair works—and what happens when it fails—can reveal important clues about cancer.
At the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute at UT San Antonio, Patrick Sung, DPhil, leads the Sung Lab, which studies the molecular machinery that repairs damaged DNA.
Think of DNA as a cell’s instruction manual. When those instructions break, specialized proteins help repair them. The Sung Lab investigates how these proteins cooperate, including proteins involved in the BRCA repair pathway.
For cancer researchers, understanding those processes helps explain how cells maintain their genetic information and how failures in that protection can contribute to disease.
During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, this work highlights why fundamental research matters: before scientists can develop better ways to target cancer, they need to understand the biology that makes it possible.
